Tank Container Logistics

End-to-end intermodal logistics for bulk liquids β€” combining tank container equipment, multimodal transport, and depot services into a single dependable chain.

Our core activities encompass the distribution, development, storage, cargo handling, leasing, and trading of intermodal tank containers designed for the safe and efficient transportation of bulk liquid products worldwide.

Intermodal by Design

Tank container logistics is the discipline of moving bulk liquids efficiently across modes of transport without unnecessary handling of the product itself. A single ISO tank container can be lifted from a truck chassis onto a rail wagon, transferred to a barge or vessel, and delivered onward by road β€” with the product remaining sealed and protected throughout.

Buhold Intermodal B.V. brings this intermodal capability together with tank container equipment, depot services, and documentation support, providing a single point of coordination for the movement of bulk liquid cargo.

  • Door-to-door and port-to-door tank container movements
  • Multimodal transport by road, rail, barge, and sea
  • Container positioning, release, and equipment control
  • Depot services including cleaning, inspection, and repair coordination
  • Heating and temperature management for sensitive products
  • Documentation support, including dangerous goods paperwork
  • Transhipment and storage coordination between transport legs
  • Shipment visibility and status reporting

Equipment Built for the Product

The correct tank container specification is essential for safe and compliant transportation. Depending on the product, our equipment range includes standard uninsulated units, insulated tanks, heated tanks, baffled tanks for road stability, and configurations suited to food-grade or high-purity products.

You can read more about specifications and configurations on our ISO Tank Containers page.

Safety, Compliance, and Documentation

Because we handle chemical products, compliance is central to everything we do. Our operations are conducted in strict accordance with applicable policies, legal requirements, industry standards, and local regulations. Shipments are supported by appropriate documentation, and where products are classified as dangerous goods, handling and transport follow the relevant modal regulations.

Verified ITCO member. Our membership of the International Tank Container Organisation supports our commitment to recognized industry standards, regulatory compliance, operational safety, and responsible tank-container transportation.

From Port of Rotterdam to the World

Our strategic presence and registration within the Port of Rotterdam transport hub places us at one of Europe's major centres for international logistics and liquid bulk transportation. From this base, tank containers can be routed through Europe's inland waterway, rail, and road networks, or loaded for deep-sea destinations worldwide.

Bulk Liquid Transport

Global transportation of specialty chemicals and standard bulk liquids β€” handled by people with in-depth knowledge of the products and regulations involved.

Through our extensive international network of logistics facilities and highly trained professionals, we provide reliable solutions for the handling and distribution of more than 3,000 different chemical products annually.

A Broad Product Range

Our expertise covers a broad range of products, from high-quality specialty chemicals to standard bulk liquids. That range demands flexibility β€” in equipment, in handling procedures, and in the transport modes we combine β€” and it demands people who understand the specific characteristics of each product they move.

With a strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational efficiency, we ensure that chemical products are handled, stored, and transported in accordance with applicable industry standards and requirements, from origin to their intended destination.

Transport Modes

Bulk liquids are moved most efficiently when modes are combined. We coordinate transport by:

  • Road β€” collection and delivery by tank container on chassis, including final-mile distribution.
  • Rail β€” long-distance inland movements with lower emissions per tonne-kilometre.
  • Barge and inland waterway β€” high-volume movements through the European waterway network, with the Port of Rotterdam as a natural hub.
  • Deep-sea β€” intercontinental shipment of ISO tank containers to and from global markets.

Dangerous Goods and Regulatory Compliance

Chemical products are frequently classified as dangerous goods, and moving them correctly requires rigorous attention to classification, packaging, labelling, documentation, and modal regulations. Our operations are conducted in strict accordance with applicable policies, legal requirements, industry standards, and local regulations.

This ensures that every aspect of our services meets the highest standards β€” and that your shipment is not delayed by avoidable compliance issues.

Temperature and Product Integrity

Many bulk liquids require controlled conditions during transport. Depending on the product, we coordinate heated, insulated, or otherwise specified tank container equipment, so that the product arrives at its destination in the same condition as when it was entrusted to us.

Our promise: we leave nothing to chance when it comes to the safe and secure handling of your valuable cargo. Our priority is to ensure that every shipment arrives at its destination in the same condition as when it was entrusted to us.

Supported by an International Network

Through our international network, industry expertise, and logistics capabilities, we provide reliable solutions for the storage, handling, transportation, and global movement of bulk liquid cargo. Our strategic presence in the Port of Rotterdam connects European production and consumption centres with international markets.

Cargo Handling

Loading, unloading, transfer, and sampling operations carried out by trained teams and supported by experienced safety advisers and field supervisors.

Our highly trained team has extensive expertise in the safe handling, storage, and transportation of chemical products.

Handling Is Where Safety Is Proven

Storage tanks and tank containers are only part of the picture. The moments of highest risk in bulk liquid logistics are the transfers β€” filling and discharging tanks, connecting and disconnecting lines, sampling, and moving equipment. This is where training, supervision, and procedure matter most.

All on-site operations at Buhold Intermodal B.V. are supported by experienced safety advisers and field supervisors who possess in-depth knowledge of the specific chemicals we handle. Their presence ensures that handling work is carried out correctly, consistently, and in compliance with the applicable requirements.

Handling Activities

  • Loading and discharging of tanks and tank containers
  • Transfer operations between storage and transport equipment
  • Sampling and quality verification support
  • Line connection, purging, and safe disconnection procedures
  • Drumming and small-package handling where required
  • Lifting and positioning of intermodal tank containers
  • Inspection and condition checks before and after handling
  • Coordination with depot, terminal, and transport partners

Supervision and Expertise

The knowledge held by our safety advisers and field supervisors is product-specific. They understand the characteristics, hazards, and handling requirements of the chemicals being moved β€” which allows risks to be identified before work begins rather than reacted to afterwards.

This supervision model is one reason our clients entrust us with products that require careful, informed handling rather than simple throughput.

Compliance in Practice

Our operations are conducted in strict accordance with applicable policies, legal requirements, industry standards, and local regulations. In practical terms, that means documented procedures, trained personnel, appropriate personal protective equipment, containment and spill-response arrangements, and clear escalation protocols.

Product knowledge matters. Because our team handles a broad range of products β€” from high-quality specialty chemicals to standard bulk liquids β€” we approach each handling operation on the basis of what is actually being moved.

Handling Linked to Logistics

Cargo handling at Buhold Intermodal B.V. is not a standalone service. It connects directly to our tank storage and tank container logistics activities, allowing product to move from vessel or tank, through handling and storage, into transport equipment, and onward to its destination β€” under one coordinated operation.

Leasing & Trading

Distribution, development, leasing, and trading of intermodal tank containers and related equipment for the global bulk liquid industry.

Our core activities encompass the distribution, development, storage, cargo handling, leasing, and trading of intermodal tank containers designed for the safe and efficient transportation of bulk liquid products worldwide.

Equipment as a Commercial Service

Buhold Intermodal B.V. is not only an operator β€” it is also an international logistics and sales organization. Alongside our storage and transport activities, we lease, trade, and develop intermodal tank container equipment, giving clients flexible access to the right equipment without the commitment of outright ownership.

Trading and Development

Beyond leasing, we are active in the trading and development of intermodal tank containers. This includes the purchase and sale of equipment, the development of units suited to particular product or route requirements, and the coordination of equipment specifications with manufacturers.

Trailer Trade and Repair

Our declared business activity includes the trade in and repair of semi-trailers and trailers (excluding caravans). This supports the intermodal equipment side of our operation and reflects the wider transport-equipment capability that sits behind our logistics services.

Further details on the equipment we work with are available on our ISO Tank Containers and Intermodal Equipment pages.

Fleet management included. Leased equipment is supported by inspection regimes, maintenance coordination, and compliance documentation appropriate to the products being carried.

Why Clients Lease Through Us

Because we also operate equipment and storage ourselves, we understand how tank containers behave in real service β€” the specifications that matter, the maintenance issues that arise, and the compliance requirements that apply. That operating experience informs the commercial advice we give.

Our Fleet

Intermodal tank containers and transport equipment engineered and maintained for the safe movement of bulk liquid products worldwide.

Our core activities encompass the distribution, development, storage, cargo handling, leasing, and trading of intermodal tank containers designed for the safe and efficient transportation of bulk liquid products worldwide.

ISO Tank Containers

Intermodal tank containers designed for the safe and efficient transportation of bulk liquid products worldwide.

A single ISO tank container can travel by road, rail, barge, and sea without the product inside it being handled again β€” the defining advantage of intermodal bulk liquid transport.

ISO tank container β€” stainless steel vessel in a 20 ft ISO freight frame
ISO tank container β€” stainless steel vessel in a 20 ft ISO freight frame

What an ISO Tank Container Is

An ISO tank container is a stainless steel pressure vessel mounted within a standard ISO freight frame, typically 20 feet in length. Because it conforms to standard container dimensions and corner-casting arrangements, it can be lifted, stacked, and secured using ordinary container-handling equipment β€” while carrying bulk liquid rather than packaged cargo.

This dual nature is what makes the tank container so effective: the product stays sealed inside a purpose-built vessel, while the unit itself moves through the global container system.

Typical Configurations

ConfigurationTypical Use
Standard uninsulatedGeneral chemical and bulk liquid products at ambient temperature
InsulatedProducts requiring thermal stability during transit
Heated / steam-heatedProducts with elevated viscosity requiring heating for discharge
BaffledProducts where surging must be controlled for road stability
Food-gradeEdible oils, juices, and other products requiring dedicated cleanliness
Specialised / high-purityProducts where contamination control is critical

Construction and Materials

Tank containers used for chemical service are generally constructed from stainless steel to resist corrosion and to allow effective cleaning between products. Depending on the product, tanks may be fitted with heating coils, insulation cladding, baffles, top and bottom discharge arrangements, and appropriate valve and fitting specifications.

Because the same unit may carry different products over its service life, cleaning and inspection between loads is a critical part of the operating cycle. Our depot and cleaning coordination ensures units are prepared appropriately before each loading.

Compliance and Certification

Tank containers are subject to periodic inspection and certification regimes, and must be maintained in accordance with the applicable international and modal requirements for the products they carry. Equipment used in our operations is maintained within these regimes, supported by our position as a verified member of the International Tank Container Organisation (ITCO).

Choosing the right unit. Product characteristics β€” viscosity, density, corrosivity, temperature sensitivity, and hazardous classification β€” all influence which tank container specification is appropriate. Our team can advise on matching equipment to product.

Leasing and Availability

ISO tank containers are available through our leasing and trading activities, on short-term, long-term, or project-specific arrangements. If you need units for a defined period rather than a permanent fleet, this is often the most efficient route.

Intermodal Equipment

Swap bodies, road tankers, chassis, and trailer equipment supporting the movement of bulk liquids across road, rail, barge, and sea.

Intermodal transport depends on equipment that fits together β€” a tank container that locks onto a chassis, a swap body that transfers between modes, a trailer that meets the road legs of the journey.

Intermodal equipment β€” swap bodies, road tankers, and chassis
Intermodal equipment β€” swap bodies, road tankers, and chassis

Beyond the Tank Container

While the ISO tank container is central to bulk liquid logistics, it does not operate alone. Moving product efficiently requires a supporting equipment set: chassis to carry containers on the road, swap bodies for flexible transfer, gensets for heated units, and road tanker and trailer equipment for specific applications.

Equipment Categories

Swap Bodies

Swap bodies are transport units designed to be transferred quickly between road vehicles and other modes. They offer flexibility where a full ISO tank container is not required, or where rapid interchange between road and rail is advantageous.

Road Tankers

For certain routes and volumes, road tankers remain the most practical solution. These units are suited to direct road movements and to operations where transfer into an intermodal unit would add handling without benefit.

Trailers and Semi-Trailers

Our declared business activity includes the trade in and repair of semi-trailers and trailers (excluding caravans). This capability supports both our own logistics operations and the wider transport-equipment market, and reflects the practical, equipment-level knowledge that sits behind our services.

Chassis and Support Equipment

Container chassis, gensets for heated tank containers, and associated support equipment complete the fleet picture. These items are positioned and maintained as part of the operating cycle so that equipment is available where and when it is needed.

Maintenance and Repair

Transport equipment used in chemical logistics is subject to wear, regulatory inspection, and the demands of continuous service. Our equipment activities include repair and maintenance coordination, so that units remain compliant and serviceable throughout their operating life.

Equipment knowledge from operation. Because we operate the equipment we supply, we understand where failures occur and what specification choices reduce downtime. That understanding informs both our leasing activities and our repair services.

Our operations in the Rotterdam port area are located at Moezelweg 161, 3198 LS Europoort Rotterdam, Netherlands β€” positioned directly within the Europoort industrial complex, close to the deep-sea terminals, tank farms, and barge connections that our bulk liquid activities depend on.

Network Coverage

Our extensive international network of logistics facilities and highly trained professionals supports the handling and distribution of more than 3,000 different chemical products annually. The network combines:

  • Tank storage facilities for liquid chemical products
  • Tank container depots and cleaning facilities
  • Port and terminal handling capabilities
  • Inland waterway, rail, and road transport connections
  • International partner facilities supporting global movements

Connecting Modes

A network is only as useful as the connections between its nodes. From Rotterdam and our partner locations, bulk liquid cargo moves by barge through the European inland waterway system, by rail on long-distance inland routes, by road for collection and final delivery, and by deep-sea vessel for intercontinental shipment.

This multimodal reach is what allows a single tank container to travel from a production site in one country to a customer in another with minimal product handling and a single coordinating party.

Verified ITCO member. Our membership of the International Tank Container Organisation supports our commitment to recognized industry standards, regulatory compliance, operational safety, and responsible tank-container transportation across our network.

Sustainability

Safety, quality, and operational efficiency β€” the foundation of responsible bulk liquid logistics and of our commitment to the products, people, and environments we work with.

With a strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational efficiency, Buhold Intermodal B.V. ensures that chemical products are handled, stored, and transported in accordance with applicable industry standards and requirements.

Safety as the First Principle

At Buhold Intermodal B.V., we leave nothing to chance when it comes to the safe and secure handling of your valuable cargo. Our priority is to ensure that every shipment arrives at its destination in the same condition as when it was entrusted to us.

Our highly trained team has extensive expertise in the safe handling, storage, and transportation of chemical products. All on-site operations are supported by experienced safety advisers and field supervisors who possess in-depth knowledge of the specific chemicals we handle.

Regulatory Compliance

Our operations are conducted in strict accordance with applicable policies, legal requirements, industry standards, and local regulations. This ensures that every aspect of our services meets the highest standards β€” covering product handling, storage conditions, transport documentation, and equipment certification.

  • Applicable policies and legal requirements
  • Recognized industry standards
  • Local and national regulations
  • Modal dangerous goods requirements
  • Equipment inspection and certification regimes

Industry Membership and Standards

Buhold Intermodal B.V. is a verified member of the International Tank Container Organisation (ITCO). This membership supports our commitment to recognized industry standards, regulatory compliance, operational safety, and responsible tank-container transportation.

Environmental Responsibility

Intermodal transport is inherently a lower-impact approach to moving bulk liquids. By combining rail, barge, and sea with road transport β€” and by keeping product sealed inside a tank container rather than handling it repeatedly β€” we reduce both handling risk and the emissions associated with long-distance movement.

Our operational practices also focus on containment, spill prevention, correct waste handling, and the efficient use of storage and transport capacity, so that resources are used effectively rather than wasted on unnecessary movements.

Quality and Operational Efficiency

Quality in our business means the product arriving in the condition it left, the documentation being correct, the equipment being suitable, and the operation running to plan. Operational efficiency is not separate from this β€” it is how quality is delivered consistently at scale.

Our People

Safety and quality ultimately depend on people. Our team includes trained operators, safety advisers, and field supervisors with product-specific knowledge, supported by ongoing attention to procedures and competence. Their expertise is the reason clients entrust us with products that require informed handling.

Our commitment: safe and reliable. We leave nothing to chance when it comes to the safe and secure handling of your valuable cargo.

Industry Insight

Why Intermodal Transport Suits Bulk Liquid Logistics

A tank container can move by road, rail, barge, and sea without the product inside it being handled again. That single characteristic reduces handling risk and simplifies the chain from production site to customer.

Choosing the Right Tank Container Specification

Viscosity, density, corrosivity, temperature sensitivity, and hazardous classification all influence which tank container specification is appropriate. Selecting the wrong unit creates handling problems, delays, and compliance risk.

Safety Advisers and Field Supervisors: Why Presence Matters

The highest-risk moments in bulk liquid logistics are the transfers β€” filling, discharging, connecting, sampling. Having experienced safety advisers on site allows risks to be identified before work begins.
